Closing the English Learner Achievement Gap
Whole system redesign for closing the EL achievement gap
Purpose
Despite a decade of expanding emphasis on closing the English Learner (EL) achievement gap, there are still large numbers of long-term English-Learners who are accumulating considerable academic deficits over time. Most districts facing a significant EL achievement gap fail to address the systemic nature of the problem, and do not integrate EL strategies within a broader approach for improving achievement for all students. Our three-phased approached to closing the EL achievement gap supports whole system change from the district office to the classroom through data analysis, project planning, targeted professional development, regular site-level coaching and the use of evidence-based tools that build the capacity of educators and staff at all levels.
Our Approach
Our three-phased approach to closing the EL achievement gap supports whole system change from the district office to the classroom through data analysis, project planning, targeted professional development, regular site level coaching, and the use of evidence-based tools that build the capacity of educators and staff at all levels. We partner with districts of any size in a multi-year process to make supporting English Language Learners everyone’s responsibility. This work is conducted in three phases (see reverse side for more details):
- Phase 1 Development of a District EL Profile
- Phase 2 Creation of EL Action Plans for both district and school sites
- Phase 3 Implementation and Change management
