Mr. Ahlman, my 6th grade teacher at Maplewood Elementary School in Elyria, Ohio, pulled a group of us together weekly for an after-school algebra class. Although algebra was not part of the curriculum at the time, he challenged us to learn more and modeled one of the values that we hold sacred at Pivot – the faith in human potential. His faith in me bolstered my own confidence, as well as my math skills, and years later helped me hold high expectations for the sixth grade students who walked through the doors of my classroom.
